scratch card is a card that contains a section or sections where, information is concealed with an opaque, Teflon based, removable material. The information can be revealed by “scratching” off the Teflon covering. Take a trip to the corner store and you will find various scratch cards printing used for gambling.

Scratch cards can be used for bingo cards, discount cards, telephone cards, PIN cards and others where a number or information is revealed only to the consumer. As with any contest involving the public, a legal description of the contest, winners vs. losers, etc. has to be printed on the card.

Scratch cards printing is also used in retail stores, restaurants and bars; you get a scratch when you buy an item and it will allow you to win t-shirts, mugs, pens and other marketing material. Another popular use of scratch cards is security pins. When your financial institution mails you a PIN number for your card, they use a scratch foil to hide the code for security purposes. Scratch cards can also be used to promote a product.

Scratch cards printing is not only limited to lottery and security purposes. It has been used on wedding invitations to reveal the wedding destination. It has also been used on business cards, postcard invitations, game play cards and many other promotional items, to add the element of surprise. While Tim Horton’s Rrroll-up-the-Rim contest is not necessarily a scratch card the idea is the same - nobody can question that promotion’s success.

The Process of Scratch cards printing

Scratch cards are produced by first printing the card with conventional printing whether offset or digital. We will then create a die that will cover the section that is concealed. Similar to hot foil stamping, this die is then used to hot stamp the Teflon-based material onto the card using our letterpress. The letterpress is equipped with a hot plate which allows for the heat activated transfer of the Teflon material.
