Process & Spot Colour
Process
Often referred to as "Full Colour" this type of printing uses four standard inks (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black - CMYK) to produce a wide range of colours. Used for print jobs with many different colours or colour photographic images it is the easiest and most popular of the two.
Tip- Make sure all of your images and files are in CMYK colour mode as it will give you the best representation of the actual colour as it will appear on your printed job.
Spot
This type of printing is used when specific one or two colours must be reproduced exactly or if a job only requires one or two colours from the start. You choose the colours you want to print with, those are mixed individually and used on the press to complete your job. Although you are using a fewer number of inks, this type of job is often more expensive than a full colour job because of the physical press work involved mixing inks and prepping the press to print with them.
Tip - Spot colours are specified using the Pantone Matching System, a universal pallet which assigns a number to each colour so that you can accurately choose the colour that you desire. You need a Pantone Swatch Book of colours to do this. We recommend that your swatch book is not more than three years old, as the inks fade and the colours are not as true as when they were first printed.
